This paper reports the research undertaken in the international collaboration project – CoLab which is jointly funded by UK EPSRC and China 863 program. The protocol presented in this paper has been applied in the large-scale CROWN Grid system. The CROWN (China Research and development environment Over Wide-area Network) is a Grid middleware system developed by Beihang University (China) which has been used by pilot applications in a number of China e-Science environments. The measurement results collected from the CROWN Grid system show that the protocol has a sound level of scalability and imposes only a limited degree of performance overhead.
