This monograph is the culmination of work which stretched over many years. It is based on exceptionally comprehensive research undertaken in libraries, archives and with interview partners in New York, Los Angeles, Madison, Princeton and elsewhere. It considers the problematic notion of authorship in film, while also trying to craft a work of cultural history which gives full weight to archival resources relating to production, artistic collaboration and reception. Kazan is understood as a kind of public, cultural entrepreneur and the book traces the complex ways in which his work is connected with American cultural and political history.
