Additional information

The report in the literature (DOI:10.1038/nmat2767) of transformation toughening in a Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) Composite seemed to offer a significant opportunity for improving their poor toughness. To place this observation on a scientific footing we modified a model for transformation toughening of ceramics to modelling that of a shear band in a BMG and to explore the role of volume change in martensitic transformation in impeding its progress. This approach showed the mechanism in the literature to be flawed and has been used to highlight this topic as one where significant further research is required (DOI:10.1016/j.mser.2013.04.001).
