Additional information

First studies of hafnium dioxide at low temperature as an alternative high-index optical material, showing improvements over tantalum pentoxide at low temperature, thus being highly attractive for use in future cryogenic GW observatories e.g. enhancements to Advanced LIGO (US) and the Einstein Telescope (Europe). This work led to invited international talks at Frontiers of Optical Coatings, Hangzhou, China (2012) and Third Galileo-Xu Guangqi meeting, Beijing (2011). Reid's expertise in developing novel optical coatings led to the award of a Royal Society Industry Fellowship £159k (2013).
