This paper result from PhD co-supervision with the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil, funded by the EPSRC (ref: EP/D000483/1) and CNPq, Brazil’s national research funding agency. The collaboration was evaluated as Outstanding in its overall assessment by EPSRC, with the top ranking in all 7 criteria. It lead directly to a further partnership with UFSCar as one of three Brazilian partners in a 3-year FP7-PEOPLE-2009-IRSES project (reference 246881, “Industrial Extensions to Production Planning and Scheduling”), co-financed by a Global Research Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
