Design and Evaluation of a Buckled Strip Compliant Actuator
Published in a premier international journal, this paper describes a highly novel reconfigurable actuator used as the fundamental building block of a full real-time hardware-in-the-loop cardiovascular simulation including a physical beating heart. Supported by Heart Research UK (RG2567;£378k), research overcame significant challenges to develop a system of sufficient fidelity to replace animal testing of heart assist devices. Capable of simulating various disease models, requiring variable size, shape and compliance, it won numerous international industrially sponsored awards including a humanitarian award, life science award and the prestigious National Instruments “application of the year”, (http://www.ni.com/gsdawards/explore_2012.htm), beating over 120 applications from 20 countries.
