This paper provides substantial experimental evidence that Al8Mn5 intermetallic particles in AZ Mg-alloys are not potent substrates for heterogeneous nucleation of alpha-Mg. This paper has settled a decades-long debate on whether Al8Mn5 intermetallic particles are responsible for grain refinement of AZ Mg-alloys.
