English abstract

Al-Suhrawardī's (d. 1191) Philosophy of Illumination (Ḥikmat al-ishrāq) is a major work in the Arabic philosophical tradition. This volume contains a full German translation, an historical and analytic introduction, and comprehensive commentary (pp. 232-432). The translation is concerned with terminological consistency, highlighted by a technical glossary, while the commentary unpacks Suhrawardī's often dense arguments, often by drawing on early commentaries of Shams al-Dīn al-Shahrazūrī (d. 1288) and Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (d. 1311 or 1316), traces his philosophical sources, and provides historical and cultural background. It should be of interest for Islamicists and historians of philosophy who do not read Arabic.
