English abstract

The book analyses popular reactions to anti-Jewish pogroms in Germany in November 1938 as reported through Nazi Party and State officials. It uses c.100 official reports from several regions and administrative levels. Officials reported a high level of popular criticism against the pogroms. They said that most Germans were upset about economic and political harm caused by open street violence/looting. Ethical aspects of anti-Jewish violence were discussed in the reports much less. The book shows that Nazi officials quoted 'popular voices' to promote a more “orderly” persecution of Jews, and to restrain the power of militant groups like the SA.
