The phylogeny of ornithischian dinosaurs.
This paper presents a detailed and extensive phylogenetic analysis of the ornithischian dinosaurs. It has received a very high number of citations relative to other similar studies. This is because the paper presents a thoroughly revised data set that has provided the foundation for numerous subsequent studies by other workers around the world. Also, some of the results help to resolve significant controversies, such as the position of the enigmatic heterodontosaurids. This work represents the results of Butler's PhD project which was proposed and supervised by Upchurch. The latter author's contribution to this paper is estimated at around 40%, with an emphasis on the analytical approach, interpretation of results, and writing/editing of the text.
