Additional information

Man High was written in 2011 in collaboration with composer Stephen Deazley and visual artist Andy McGregor. The piece lasts 40 minutes and was devised in response to documentary footage of Joseph Kittinger’s historic leap from space in 1960. The work’s development and subsequent performances were supported by development grants from Creative Scotland and from UNESCO, Glasgow City of Culture.

The first performance took place at Glasgow City Halls in September 2011. An eduaction project ran alongside the development of the piece and the project team commissioned Yann Seznec to develop the “Man High mixer” which involved young people aged 14-18 who worked with media from the project. Video and sounds developed by the team were remixed into small media pieces or studies. Martin also worked with three Sound Design students based at the University of Edinburgh to realise an installation called ”Music Impossible”. This installation formed part of a day of family engagement at Glasgow’s City Halls that also involved two performances of Man High, a showing of the results of the Man High Mixer project and a performance of Brian Eno’s Apollo given by Icebreaker.
