Additional information

This paper concerns a totally new instrument developed at the School of Design. The result was the provision of a modern, easy to use and accurate opto-electronic instrument for enabling the measurement of weft insertion speed on an air-jet weaving machine. It improves vastly on the the stroboscopic instrument normally used for the purpose. Marked weft yarn was needed initially for yarn movement detection, but this limitation has now been overcome. The instrument can be used as a research tool or for optimising weft insertion and thus improving the quality and clarity of woven fabric design.
