Additional information

This paper analyses the relationship between fashion and art using the concept of authenticity. Noting that while art, as a non-utilitarian practice, has been distinguished from fashion, elite fashion shares features of creativity and skill with old masters’ paintings, for example. The article then develops two key qualities that are absent from the debate. The first is ‘the promise of fantasy’, the second is ‘the fear of mortality/perishability’. The article provides an original analysis of the role of style in guarding the cultural meaning of art categories, and of the traditional standard of quality with its history in court society.
