Additional information

This book chapter presents details of systems by which two-dimensional repeating designs (or patterns) can be differentiated and classified by reference to their constituent geometric characteristics including their symmetry. Important theoretical perspectives are reviewed and debated, and the symmetry characteristics of motifs, border patterns and all-over patterns are identified and illustrated using a wide range of original, newly-produced, illustrations. This output brings together conceptual developments associated with the principal author’s work in recent years and fresh perspectives provided by the second author.
