Additional information

This paper represents a body of work concerning innovative applications of colour-imaging to dentistry. In this paper a new whiteness index is proposed that enables the efficacy of tooth-whitening treatments to be properly assessed. As part of the work a digital imaging system was been developed that can take colorimetrically accurate images of in vivo teeth and the imaging system and research expertise has been applied to other dental studies such as measuring the discoloration of teeth that results from serious head-injury trauma. This latter work was presented at the Annual Congress of the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry and was awarded the Jens Anderson Award in 2009 and 2011.
