Investigation of Streamwise and Transverse Instabilities on Swept Cylinders and Implications for Turbine Blading
This analysis of new and existing experimental measurements provides compelling evidence of three-dimensional flow structures over turbine blade leading edges, where accurate heat transfer computations are critical for enhancing the service life of steam cooled high pressure turbine blades. The main result is a new theory for the spanwise wavelength of the structures that accounts for blade sweep, which is now commonplace in modern blade designs. This enables the design of new thermal coating barriers that account for the three-dimensional heat transfer pattern from these flow structures, enhancing blade performance and service life.
