The work analyses the most ancient testimonies of the toponymy of Mancomunidad de Municipios de Las Encartaciones (Biscay) and later documents with the aim of achieving better understanding of the presence and coexistence of Romance and Basque languages, and the diatopic variation of linguistic conditions. The research seeks to establish a basis on which to determine a chronology of Romance and Basque place names.
