Design for All: Architecture and Democracy
Design for All constitutes an imperative for contemporary museums. The term is associated with
the practical consideration for accessibility regarding both the building and the museum’s
collections and programme. State-of-the-art technologies under the service of the Design for All,
assist museums to address persons with disabilities and their special needs, but also to extend
access to a wider range of audience groups - from the perspective of their own needs and
interests. Nevertheless, the Design for All history and underlying theories predate its current
application in museum design and provide a privileged terrain to discuss the relation between
architecture and democracy.
