'Artists vs Hollywood' moving image exhibition (2008-2009)
This international curatorial project, resulting in two exhibitions, focuses on the relation between mainstream cinema and artist film and video. The project explores how artists are experimenting with the structures and ideology of mainstream cinema (e.g. narrative, representation, stardom) and what styles and repercussions can be traced from this (e.g. appropriation, reenactment, reimagining). Drawing on narrative theory including Metz on film codes and Mayne on narrative meaning, the project included a survey of over 50 artists’ work, resulting in three curatorial themes and 15 films and videos curated and presented in the UK and Australia.
