Additional information

<19> This paper presents a novel attack of generic value that had broken CAPTCHAs that were widely deployed by major Internet companies including Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google. It has advanced the collective understanding in academia and industry of text CAPTCHA design. Responding to this paper (and its earlier confidential versions circulated to the industry), Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google have all changed their CAPTCHA designs. Many techniques introduced in this paper have become standard methods for evaluating CAPTCHA security. The resulting invited talks include Yahoo!, Microsoft and Cisco.
