Additional information

This paper was supported by the European project SmartCaP (NMP 13912, 378k Euro) and was the first finite element study of a scaffold with heterogeneous architecture. It was shown that the local mechanical stimuli perceived by the cells attached onto the scaffold could be 100 to 1000 times higher than the macroscopic loading applied directly onto the scaffold.
