Investigation of primer/preservative basecoats for timber using vacuum impregnation
This paper provides information on the feasibility and efficacy of a novel low-cost treatment to improve the long-term durability of factory furnished joinery components for exterior use. The work was part of an EU funded project PRIME QLK5-CT-2001-00801 with partners from the Netherlands, UK, and Finland. The technique impregnated the preservatives and primer layer in one step, consequently reducing process time and cost. The dual aspect of the process was novel for the timber industry and provided the basis for future work by Arch Timber Protection and TRADA the timber trade organisation. This work led to several publications by the partners and presentation at the Woodcoatings Congress.
