Aristocratic Families in Republican France, 1870-1940

This book is based on papers from over seventy private family archives. The research was immensely time-consuming because no inventories are available online, because the papers have not been digitised and hence had to be consulted onsite at locations widely dispersed across France, and because photographing or photocopying of private archives is generally prohibited. The project required much work to enable me to address the scholarship in a diverse range of fields: not just the history of France but also French literature, gender studies, historical demography, family law and the emerging field of the history of emotions.
