Effect of conformity and contact stress on wear in fixed-bearing total knee prostheses
Supported by EPSRC portfolio award (GR/S63892/01) and WELMEC (Centre of Excellence in Medical Engineering funded by Wellcome Trust and EPSRC, WT088908/Z/09/Z) first description and experimental demonstration of the reduction in surface wear of polyethylene in knee prostheses as a result of reduced conformity and contact surface area. Supported by fundamental pin on plate studies and definition of new wear law. Findings have been applied to describe low wear design solutions in low conforming total knee replacements, and in partial knee replacement, collaboration with DePuy (>£1m) (contact Cath Hardaker, chardake@its.jnj.com) both of which are now commercial products in global markets.
