Additional information

• We report concept, theory and experimental validation of novel low-cost, high-performance, magnetic substrates for capturing suspensions of micron-dimensioned magnetic particles, suitable for bioassays, within microfluidics.

• By programming blank 'credit cards' as magnetic substrates we re-deployed existing technology to offer a simpler solution than hitherto reported.

• It addresses an international focus on 'simple, low-cost, microfluidics'.

• The technique interests our collaborators at dstl (Dr Martin McDonnell) for low-cost biosensor applications.
