Double-weighted statement

This large critical edition brings together 47 works, most of which have never been published before. It was prepared between 2003 and 2013. The main scholarly reasons for this long period of preparation were: the sheer quantity of music to be transcribed, analysed and edited; the challenges of assessing the credentials of allegedly English anonymi transmitted by continental sources alone; and the difficulties of evaluating the 18 fragmentary English sources, several of which involve severe problems of decipherment. The edition thus involved ‘collection/analysis of a significant body of material’ and ‘use of primary sources which were especially extensive/complex’.
