Additional information

Adlington convened the conference from which this volume sprang. He chose the contributors (18 of the original 50 speakers), and edited their contributions (c.7000 words each). Especially significant for the volume's research contribution are the statements of three senior musicians (Manzoni, Lieberman, Boehmer), offering an unprecedented cross-section of first-hand reminiscences from individuals with close personal involvement in communism. These statements were first delivered at the conference's main panel session, which was curated and chaired by Adlington. Adlington also contributed the opening chapter (8100 words), which offers a prioneering appraisal of the field and a delineation of the volume’s principal themes.
