Development and Validation of an Unintrusive
Model for Predicting the Sensation of Envelopment
Arising from Surround Sound Recordings*
This paper explores the primary differentiating attribute of spatial audio: listener envelopment, through collaboration with industry leaders in response to multichannel audio systems Bang&Olufsen and BBC R&D. This paper proposes an objective model based on formal tests that can evaluate the key component of spatial audio quality (SAQ). Its contributions include features employed in a higher-level SAQ prediction model, US patents (No. 12/051912 granted May 2012), citations and commercial interest from other spatial audio research groups/companies, and on-going collaborations with B&O (Jan Abildgaard, Head of Acoustics <JGP@Bang-Olufsen.dk>) and BBC (Frank Melchior, Head of Audio Research <Frank.Melchior@bbc.co.uk>) have resulted.
