Novel quantitative methods were developed and used for mapping trace elements in rat retina to study their affects in diseases where metal metabolism is affected, such as diabetes. These results point to the underlying causes of blindness, and leads to potential cures and/or preventions of blindness in these types of diseases. This collaborative work with Manchester highlights the versatility of ion beam analysis for biological applications.
