Conversion of mammographic images to appear with the noise and sharpness characteristics of a different detector and x-ray system
This paper presents a methodology where one set of images is collected on one particular imaging system when detecting cancer. These images are degraded as if they had been acquired on different imaging systems at different X-ray doses. Observer studies are based on single image quality from one particular (higher quality) imaging system, removing need for multiple X-ray does and inter-patient anatomical variability when comparing system performance. This methodology is being developed within the National Coordinating Centre for the Physics of Mammography (UK's NHS Breast Screening Programme) and at the University of Leuven for CR-UK/EPSRC Medical Imaging £2.5M OPTIMAM programme.
