Anion-exchange membranes for alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells: comparison of pendent benzyltrimethylammonium- and benzylmethylimidazolium-head-groups
This article reports a substantial study that leads to a major recommendation in the field of alkaline polymer electrolytes: Imidazolium head-group chemistry is not adequate for application in alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells. This recommendation is important as multiple groups worldwide have been expending considerable resources (financial and/or manpower) on the development of alkali stable head-groups and imidazolium-containing alkaline polymer electrolytes. This paper also introduces to researchers in the field a new analytical methodology for screening for head-group stability (when the head-groups are fully hydrated).
