Additional information

The density and morphology of C-S-H, the binder phase of cement which controls porosity, and hence performance and degradation, is much disputed. The lack of a reliable means of characterisation inhibits the introduction of low CO2 impact, supplementary cementitious materials, to lower CO2 impact of cement. We provide such a means and follow density and composition throughout hydration for the very first time.
