Additional information

This paper presents a wealth of information on the properties of the Martian soils which was obtained through rigorous experimental testing in an Earth-analogue test facility developed at the University of Surrey. A database which characterizes the properties of soil-simulants was supplied to Astrium Ltd. for soil trafficability assessment and mobility analysis of the ExoMars rover. The data has already been adopted by ESA, and will enable them to predict and enhance the performance of future rovers. Further, these results are now used for the 2M Euro EU FP7 FASTER project to improve the performance of the ExoMars breadboard rover.
