Additional information

Radiation damage affects profoundly the properties of graphite, including gross changes in crystallite dimensions. Until our work, all theories of graphite radiation damage invoked only point defect mechanisms. We showed that buckling and folding of layers cause dimensional change and formulated a quantitative theory based on dislocations. In so doing, we advanced the dislocation theory of layered materials. The article summarises evidence for involvement of basal glide dislocations, and simulates X-ray diffractograms which are fully consistent with those from irradiated graphite.
