Additional information

The UK Governments Simplified Building Energy Building Model ( SBEM ) for estimating energy consumption and CO2 emissions for non domestic buildings ignores most equipment energy consumption within buildings. This research shows that omitting the energy consumed by supermarket refrigerated food display cabinets underestimates total energy consumption for such buildings by over 20%. It is already informing debate and will soon be cited as evidence in an awareness campaign intended to persuade Government to modify the SBEM procedure . The initial stages of this work were funded by Tesco via the Sustainable Consumption Institute.
