Trauma-Tragedy: Symptoms of Contemporary Performance
This monograph was included in Research Councils UK (RCUK) and Universities UK’s ‘Big Ideas for the Future’ report on ‘excellent research taking place in UK higher education that is likely to have a major impact on the UK and the world in the future’ (RCUK, 2010).
This volume is the first book length study to position performance at the centre of an extensive, cross-disciplinary exploration of trauma and culture. As well as drawing on primary source interviews, the book focuses on contemporary performances from c.1995 to 2009 with analyses being made of both documented and live performance work across that date range. As such, it examines a considerable body of performance material and required the author to critique, synthesise and develop research from across multiple disciplinary perspectives including trauma theory, medical history, theatre and performance studies, anthropology, philosophy and sociology.
