Additional information

Research for this project included consultation of printed variants of the play using Narcissus Luttrell’s signed copy, held in the Bodleian as copy-text and collating against quartos from University of Cambridge and Beinecke Library, Yale, and duodecimo second edition in the British Library, to produce a scholarly rigorous, yet accessible edition.

The introduction is an original piece of research on the representation of women and science in the early eighteenth-century. The research context is a challenge to the tenor of much recent scholarship on theatrical moral reform in the early eighteenth century, through its focus on the performance of gambling.
