When published, this paper reported world leading results on passive, coherent beam combining of diode lasers in an external Talbot cavity, doubling coherent power to 1.7W (see Waarts, Appl. Phys. Lett. 58, 1991, 2586). This work stimulated further work on coherent beam combining which is currently being supported by the European consortium project BRIDLE ref.314719 www.bridle.eu (Thomas Brand, DILAS T.Brand@dilas.de).
