Meeting the Masters - David Binns
In 2008, Binns was invited to present his research as part of the prestigious ‘Meeting the Masters’ programme at the International Ceramics Studio (ICS), in Kecskemet, Hungary. The month-long residency programme involves 3-4 international artists each year, invited to run workshops and lectures, as a means of disseminating innovative, new practice and technologies. The ICS is one of the most highly regarded centres in the world for technical and creative research within contemporary ceramics. His residency coincided with an international juried competition, in which he was a prize winner.
Binns’ investigations involved sourcing and testing a wide range of aggregate material inclusions, in order to enrich the visual properties of unadorned clay bodies. To fully realise the visual properties of the added aggregates, the fired clay necessitated a process of grinding and polishing; requiring further investigation into appropriate abrasive materials.
Binns’ research led to an invitation to membership of the UNESCO International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). Through membership of the IAC he has exhibited his work in Korea, the World Ceramic Museum in Xian, China, the Musée national de Céramique-Sèvres, France and Santa Fe, USA.

• & invited speaker at the 2013 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, S.Korea.
In recognition of his innovative practice, in 2009, Binns was awarded £25,000 ‘Creative Wales Award’, from the Arts Council of Wales.
