Long-term collaboration between Cardiff and Tsinghua Universities has led to the dissemination of the Wittrick-Williams algorithm for buckling and vibration analysis in widely used Chinese textbooks and software (e.g. “Programming Structural Mechanics” by S. Yuan, ISBN 7-04-008632-8). An efficient computational procedure for vibration analysis of non-uniform beams is extended in this paper to the analysis of non-uniform cylindrical shells. The paper was selected to appear in a special issue of “Computers and Structures” on Eigenvalues of Continuous Systems.
