This emerged from collaborative projects (EPSRC GR/T17007/01 and /BBSRC E19751) generating scorpion azamacrocycles as biorecognition ligands. It is highly cited demonstrating biorecognition ligand/semi-conducting nanoparticle interaction with photo generated electron-hole pairs and measurement of intracellular Zn2+ accumulation in the patients with Alzheimer’s. It links with our clinical study on drug-active contrast agents at Addenbrookes Hospital (Wellcome Trust ISSF internship), whereas particular interest for our Sydney collaborators (http://groups.chem.usyd.edu.au/todd/research-azamacrocycles.html) stems from their candidature as drugs for HIV and cancer. They are interested in the influence of azomacrocyle Zn2+ binding linked to apoptosis and we are interested in their potential as sensitive imaging agents.
