Additional information

This 11B-NMR and holographic study established the nature of the interaction between L-lactate and phenylboronic acids in order to improve the selectivity for glucose. It was important to understand the mechanism of this interaction since there are high concentrations of lactate in tear fluid. Furthermore, it has led to a similar approach being used to create a potentially-implantable real-time acoustic sensor for glucose (Hu et al. (2012) Biosens.Bioelectron. 35, 425-428) which has been licensed to Quantz Medical (Suzhou) Ltd and to create metabolite-sensitive holograms readable by a camera-enabled Smartphone and thereby be of value to diagnostic physicians in resource-poor environments.
