Additional information

The findings of this work, based on rigorous optimisation approaches for timing and type of cleaning actions, are essential for optimal operation of heat exchanger networks, particularly in energy-intensive processes (e.g. crude oil refineries) where fouling leads to significant energy losses. They were a key part of a successful TSB project application by co-author Ian Wilson, “Closing the Fouling Loop”, and attracted a PhD student from Oman on a funded scholarship.
