This work provides the theoretical underpinnings for the accurate separation of blood flow territories in the brain using a Vessel Encoded Arterial Spin Labeling MRI method.Further work has refined the implementation to make it more clinically relevant (doi:10.1016/j.media.2011.12.004), as well as demonstrate its clinical utility: for example in patients with arteriovenous malformation (Proc. ISMRM, 2013, p1128). This work has led directly to a US patent application (20130249547) and is closely tied to a separate patent application in the same area (20130253895). Both patents have been licensed through ISIS innovation to Siemens Healthcare.
