Blood flow in the rabbit aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta.
This paper, featured on the journal cover, combined several technical innovations to simulate arterial blood flow in a numerical model of unprecedented detail and extent. A movie of the simulation won all three BHF scientific video awards in 2011 [http://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-matters-online/december-january-2011-2012/research/atherosclerosis/streamlined-video.aspx]. The methods underlay awards of a BHF project grant [PG/13/16/30040, £210k] and two FP7 grants (274522, €210k; 294104, €75k), led to collaborations with Stanford University and Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, stimulated invitations to talk at conferences on Multiscale Methods and Validation (San Francisco) and CFD in Medicine and Biology (Israel) in 2012, and helped my student Vincent obtain an Imperial lectureship.
