<28>Accurate function prediction of genes within the human genome is critical for rapid progress within medical and life sciences. Unfortunately, until this publication, we had no robust way of assessing the accuracy of protein function prediction since its benchmarking is technically very challenging. This paper describes the first ever international evaluation of protein function prediction, employing a unique design where thousands of sequences were initial targets and only those few that gained experimental evidence after 9 months were finally assessed. In recognition of the study’s size and importance, it was published in a journal with an impact factor of 19.276.
