<20>This paper contributes to the new movement in HCI called “in the wild”, by exploring the often overlooked role of the researcher in how data is collected and interpreted. Two in depth studies were conducted and demonstrated how researcher participation in the wild can provide a new perspective in deployment of technology. It also offers insights and guidance into how to understand and operationalize the important role of context when designing and running user studies. Since, this has been a central concern in a number of workshops and a special issue in ToCHI on the turn to “in the wild”.
