Additional information

This paper has identified the cause of premature failure of osteo-odonto-keratoprosthetic (OOKP) devices - the only hope of sight for corneal blind patients with no functioning tear film. Quantification of local inflammation effects on the degradation of the tooth lamina used means that the information has directly influenced the one UK centre with specialist facilities for OOKP surgery (C Liu, Brighton Eye Hospital: CSCLiu@aol.com). Optimisation of implant design (thickness) has directly increased projected time to implant failure. Post-2009 OOKP conferences, citations/publications and surgical opinion reflect these changes and revised criteria for selection of candidate materials for synthetic OOKP lamina.
