Porphyrins are used in photodynamic therapy (the use of a combination of light, a photosensitiser and oxygen to bring about a cytotoxic effect in cancers etc.) and medical imaging. This paper discusses the synthesis and phase behaviour of a range of novel porphyrin derivatives that could potentially exhibit enhanced properties as photosensitisers over those currently used.
