Shipping the medieval military: English maritime logistics in the fourteenth century
This 100,000-word monograph is based on extensive research in British archives. The book assesses the naval and logistical actions of England’s kings over the first part of the Hundred Years War, highlighting the scale of the shipping and manpower during these operations. As fleets were assembled through the impressment of merchant ships, the book also offers insights into the potential size of the merchant fleet. Through an examination of shipping provided for naval operations, Lambert analyses the economic fortunes of several ports and so highlights key developments in the variation of regional maritime development across England.
